Non Resident Alien

This is a chronicle of my tragi-comic life as a foreigner in the United States. My official status when I started school in 2004, was that of a Non-Resident-Alien and that's where the title of the blog is from. My status has changed to Resident Alien since then. My personal experiences are a unique roller coaster mundane everyday experiences for locals, but unique from the eyes of a foreigner. I started this blog to share some of my experiences beginning my third year living in this country.

aXbo

Last October out of sleep deprived and bad morning desperation I searched online for a fancy alarm clock I had heard about. This one wakes you up based on your sleep cycle, so that you don't wake up feeling grumpy and horrible. I found the aXbo here. It was pricey and I was almost willing to pay the 200 Euros or more so that I could have good mornings. Then I noticed that digitalreviews was running a contest to give away three of these beautiful alarm clocks. I entered the contest not knowing my lucky stars were aligned that day. You guessed it, I was one of the contest winners. Of course, I spent half a day, during finals week, writing a 100 word essay saying why I wanted it. The beauty arrived the day after Christmas and even before that I had become a celebrity of sorts since my name was published online as one of the winners. I have used the product almost every single day since then and it works like a charm. Gone are those grumpy mornings and multiple alarms and disabling snooze features. You can read my review here!

Bee Movie

Bzz Bzz Bzz!!! So what if it was released in November 2007, I saw it a second time at the University Theatre this evening with my friends and it was a blast. Its a very kid friendly movie and the special effects are amazing. Seinfeld does a great job as Barry and its just as good as his stand-up comedies. Every dialogue is a laughter riot. You will hear every 'B joke' possible and still laugh at them. It has typical American elements to it, like the pollen jocks and girls falling for them, and the bunch of bullies and the wimps and all the gritty details of American life. That is what makes it so much fun and somewhat predictable. Predictable or not, it is a witty movie, and make sure you listen to the dialogues carefully. The scene with Bee Larry King is loaded with jabs at all kinds of popular references. That is what makes Americans amazing. They love to make fun of themselves and laugh at their silliness. Two big thumbs up for the Bee Movie. Keep Buzzing with your kids in tow!!

Evening with the team

Last evening was a blast with my RA colleagues. I love parties and this was a nice cozy get together with my team. We were supposed to have watched a movie and played games but the movie was relegated to the background while we had tons of fun eating and playing games. To me the highlight of the evening was the beautiful cake Laura (big boss) baked us!! The whole evening was fun! I work with an amazing team of people who put up with all my eccentricities. Last evening I learned two new board games, Apples to Apples and Dominos. Dominos is an intellectual game. Brad (our new boss) made it a game of skill when he made a tower of dominos and of course we had to make it fall. Charlie helped bring the tower down. Here are a few pictures from the evening. Laura's lil 'un is so adorable!!
