Non Resident Alien

This is a chronicle of my tragi-comic life as a foreigner in the United States. My official status when I started school in 2004, was that of a Non-Resident-Alien and that's where the title of the blog is from. My status has changed to Resident Alien since then. My personal experiences are a unique roller coaster mundane everyday experiences for locals, but unique from the eyes of a foreigner. I started this blog to share some of my experiences beginning my third year living in this country.

Twenty Pounds Heavier

Today I am twenty pounds heavier than I was four years ago. The reasons and excuses for my weight gain run several pages. I am not the kind of person who suffers from body image issues; however, I have noticed several health related issues since my slow weight gain. The predominant issue is my inability to walk faster, and climb a small flight of stairs without huffing and puffing like a steam engine. I know I have a family history of diabetes, which means I need to be extra careful; however, my recognition of that ends there. I live less than five minutes away from the superbly equipped campus gym and I have been there fewer than ten times in the last two years of living on campus. Somehow I have mastered the art of making excuses to not go. I have also stopped cooking my meals at home for other reasons which has resulted in eating outside, pre-packaged and frozen food on a daily basis which is the least healthy option one could choose. I do not like going on diets. I would prefer to eat healthy and exercise, but the heavier I have become the less motivation I seem to have to exercise. So, again since its almost end December, I will make a New Year resolution to lose 2 pounds a month. Its not difficult to make resolutions, lets see how this one ends up a year from now.

Let it Snow!!

I was indoors the whole day today and did not realise that it has started to snow sometime late afternoon. As I walked out to get to work around 5:45 this evening, I saw a thin layer of fine white powder coating on the cars and grass. I love the first snow of the season. Its always a nice warm feeling, in a manner of speaking that is!! My gloomy day has been brightened by snow this evening. Let it snow!! Let it snow!! Let it snow!!
